However, I am targeting reluctant readers with this post. For people who tend not to read, I think they pick up a book like Crime and Punishment, can't get through it, feel like they need to finish it, never do, and fall back out of reading. This kind of concept also goes back into the 50 page rule. It's about giving yourself permission to move on to something you like, versus struggling with something that you don't, at least when you first get started. It's easy to fall out of reading and I am attempting to provide some tricks to stay on the wagon. :)

Of course, studies show that more people are getting back into reading by reading the classics on their iPhone, since Project Gutenberg has them for free, so I could be wrong on this.jdscott50https://www.blogger.com/profile/04229906352079565341noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31106814.post-75776422814562482962014-05-15T22:29:02.417-07:002014-05-15T22:29:02.417-07:00I agree with everything, but the classics part. It is still the greatest book I have ever read, and I didn't even mind the writing- it was beautiful and deep. It has taught me better vocabulary and has opened my mind up to the cream of the English language as well as foreign classics like Crime and Punishment. I agree, some classics are hard to get through, but once you start reading the great stuff, you'll never go back to post-modernism. I otherwise abuse my library like it's nobody's business, usually receiving an item a month through ILL (I'm averaging it out, I usually get several items at once), CDs, books, DVDs, Blu-Rays, memberships at various library systems across the state, and I try to bike to the library as often as I can (today: in the rain). And finally, I'm convinced libraries are thrice as popular as they were in the early 90s. (They sorta got a bad rap before their catalogs became computerized.)CSLnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31106814.post-16965645257609517722013-05-06T00:03:02.721-07:002013-05-06T00:03:02.721-07:00Hi nice article....you guys did a great job. ....t...Hi nice article....you guys did a great job. ....thanks for sharing..
Promotional Flash Drive Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06725994301955165748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31106814.post-47226079792809024672012-11-06T16:14:18.799-08:002012-11-06T16:14:18.799-08:00Thanks for posting. If we can't provide the level the users want, we aren't doing a very good job.

I'm glad you could increase bandwidth at your library. I was able to increase it at my last library, after a bit of struggle with E-rate that I blogged about here. At my current library, it is much more difficult without having $2mill in the bank.

It may be Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the rescue for all of us. :)jdscott50https://www.blogger.com/profile/04229906352079565341noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31106814.post-15131869270032421502010-02-20T17:42:14.007-08:002010-02-20T17:42:14.007-08:00I agree - what an in depth and thorough article. O...I agree - what an in depth and thorough article. One I keep coming back to read. The first day I read it was the day we ran out of bandwidth . . . again. The good news is that the idea of policing bandwidth had finally been ruled out at our library. We added yet another (fourth) T1 line for the short term, but at least at this point everyone understands that T1 lines will not fill the bill forever. But the next step is a doozy, and I'm not sure if we will be one of the libraries to make the leap. Scary indeed.Frontline Librarianhttp://frontlinelibrarian.com/blog/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31106814.post-73040771660946764042009-12-08T07:57:52.078-08:002009-12-08T07:57:52.078-08:00Thank you for the comments. That really is the crux. I think the "10 Things" list is targeting an old school administrator who still hasn't quite gotten it. A neighboring library system recently sent out a list serve request asking other libraries for input as they created a taskforce (yes, a taskforce) to explore whether they should have a facebook or twitter page. Instead of waiting until it appears the technology boat is about to leave us behind and then acting, library administrators need to be listening and learning about what the future holds for not only libraries, but also business, technology, nonprofit fundraising, etc. Not so that we can jump on each and every bandwagon that comes along, but so that we can be writing mental notes to ourselves about how these things may connect with the mission of our library.

Helpful stuff to think through - thanks!Frontline Librarianhttp://www.frontlinelibrarian.com/blog/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31106814.post-37303480432012310412009-12-04T18:33:20.322-08:002009-12-04T18:33:20.322-08:00Thanks for the link.
